What is Computer Assisted Knee replacement Surgery?

In knee replacement surgery the positioning of the new joint parts must be accurate. In computer-assisted surgery, the computer helps the surgeon in achieving this.

How does Computer help in proper positioning of New Joint parts?

The surgeon attaches special reflectors to the patient’s thigh and leg bones that are detected by an infrared camera connected to the computer. The computer then constructs an electronic model of the knee from the information fed by the surgeon. This helps the surgeon for proper positioning of the parts.

Is proper positioning of the new joint crucial?

Yes, it is. An incorrect position can lead to early wear & loosening of the replaced new joint.

What is the next major importance of computer?

The correction of knee deformity is as important as that of join position in knee replacement. The computer helps the surgeon in getting the desired correction in each and every case.

What are the other benefits of the computer?

  • Knee arthritis with complex deformities can be tackled appropriately using the computer where conventional techniques may be inadequate.
  • In the obese patient where knee deformity is difficult to assess, computer improves accuracy and avoids errors.
  • More useful in Asian patients with deformed bones.
  • Less blood loss, Less Cardio-Pulmonary strain
  • Early functional recovery & Short hospital stay
  • Better function of the joint
  • Longer survival of the replaced joint

An advanced Knee Replacement Surgery to enact you better

Knee replacement surgery is performed to repair the affected knee. The knee may be affected due to arthritis, aging, injury and the factors deteriorate knee function. In such cases, knee replacement surgery is being the best solution to alleviate the pain and other associated troubles. There are some types of knee replacement surgery called Computer-assisted knee replacement, Partial and revision knee replacement besides traditional knee replacement.

In computer-assisted knee replacement accuracy level is a key point. When a surgeon struggles in placing new prosthesis, this knee replacement helps him a lot. Computer-assisted knee replacement surgery is used to fix the new joint appropriately.

With the help of special reflectors attached to the leg and thigh bones, they are identified by the infrared camera attached to the computer. Acquiring information from the surgeon, an electronic knee model is constructed by the computer. The computer accurately guides the surgeon for proper fixing of the components. Since it is an advanced method, its advantages are many:

  • A meager blood loss
  • Quick recovery
  • Accurate fixing of a prosthesis
  • A useful method for deformed and fractured bones
  • No failure rates

In some cases, the whole knee may not be affected whereas some of the key components may be. Such cases are treated with Partial knee replacement. In this surgery, only the damaged area is replaced with a new prosthesis and the healthy cartilage, the bone will never be disturbed. Since the surgery consumes less time, the advantages will be:

  • Reduced blood loss
  • Economical
  • Improved knee function
  • Knee’s motion is maintained
  • Less invasive with faster recovery

When previously done knee replacement is not successful and hurting the patient, then Revision knee replacement in Chennai is recommended. Here, a new prosthesis replaces the old one and it makes the patient well to do all activities.

Dr. Kanna’s Knee & Ortho Clinic is the top hospital in providing the best knee replacement treatment. Dr. Raj Kanna is one of the few prominent surgeons in Asia who performs computer-assisted knee replacement surgery in Chennai using imported implants from USA (Depuy Johnson and Johnson) for all patients.

Miracle of Stem-Cell Therapy For Knee Pain at Chennai

Application and use of Stem-cell therapy are to cure a disease or condition of knee pain. Bone Marrow Transplant is most extensively used for stem-cell therapy but some therapies came from the umbilical cord as well. Unlike traditional method to cure knee pain, this modern approach of Stem-cell method to recover knee pain much beneficial and advantageous.

Stem-cell therapy is a process where doctors extract the unique type of cells from the rich-density zone where good quality cells are available in excessive numbers and inject them into the damaged portion to cure knee pain.

Stem Cells

The virtue of the Stem cells is unique because of their special characteristics. Quota and quantity of Stem cells can be expanded by dividing themselves and multiply with their numbers. Their function of stem-cell is depended on the placement or that which part of the human body they will be placed. They can transform themselves to suit the environment where they are placed. For instance, when stem cells are placed near a damaged cartilage, it can transform itself into a cartilage tissue

Recover from Possible Complications in knee replacement surgery with the best Knee Surgeon

The threat of impediment from a knee replacement can result from the issue during surgery or a faulty implant. A patient own health may increase or prevent many of the risks of surgery. Most complications are minor, but some of them are fatal and infection can be very serious.

Dr. Raj Kanna is one among the best known orthopedic and knee surgeon in Chennai who can manage and help you recover from the failed knee surgeries. He is an expert in the field and can perform knee replacement surgery using computer navigation technology. At his clinic: Dr. Kanna’s Knee & Ortho Clinic the treatments are performed with the most modern and advanced technology.

Possible Complications in knee replacement surgery

The possible knee replacement complications are the infection and fault implant design. The risk may depend on the general health of the patients and his age. Complication can also result from anesthesia or it can develop later from the faulty implant.

Knee implants loosening and faulty implant designs:

Loosening is one of the most common complication result from the faulty device. This happens when gears of an implant begin to separate from the bone, creating unsteadiness and pain in the joint. Loosing is natural over the time period but it usually does not occur for several years. In poorly designed devices, it occurs in less than a year or a year. Infection can also lead to implant loosening.

Complication from faulty implants includes:

  • Loosening or fracture of the device components
  • Joint instability and dislocation
  • Component misalignment and breakdown
  • Nerve damage
  • Bone fracture
  • Swelling and joint pain.

Infection after the knee implant:

Fortunately, the chances of having infected knee prosthesis are relatively very low. About 2 cases in a year have the painful infection according to the reports. These infections can be incredibly costly and difficult to treat also.

A disease like diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis can increase a patient’s risk of infection. Researchers also believe this may be due to how the conditions affect their immune system. It is easier for the microorganisms to affix to the device and infect surrounding tissue.

Measures to prevent infections:

  • Proper control of diabetes in diabetic patients, before surgery.
  • Use of disposable items, wherever possible
  • A well-equipped operation theater which has laminar flow with HEPA air filter
  • Use of Space suit to avoid the spread of infection
  • Use of antibiotics, as per the norms.

Dr. Kanna’s Knee & Ortho Clinic which is headed by Dr. Raj Kanna provides the best solutions for all knee surgery failures with utmost care.

Keyhole surgery of the knee ACL injuries

The knee is a very important joint in your body. If you tear the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in your knee, you might need a reconstructive surgery of your knee. The ACL is a tough band of tissue joining the thigh bone to the shin bone at the knee joint. It provides the knee the stability and runs diagonally inside the knee. It helps to control the back-and-forth movement of the leg

Causes of ACL Injuries

ACL Injury can occur due to:

  • Landing incorrectly from a jump
  • Stopping suddenly
  • Changing direction suddenly
  • Having collision

If this ACL is torn completely your knee may become very unstable and lose its full range of movement.

Treatments for ACL Injuries

Arthroscopy: an arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery. It employs a medical instrument called arthroscope, which is thin, bendable tube with bundles of fiber-optic cables inside it. Also, it has a light source and the camera attached to it. The surgeon makes a small incision on the front of the knee and inserts an arthroscope. This will illuminate the knee joint and will transmit the image of the knee to a television monitor. This makes the surgeon to see inside of your knee clearly. Also through the incision, other medical instrument can be inserted. The surgeon will use these instruments to remove the torn ligament and reconstruct the ACL.

The graft tissue will be placed in the same position as the old ACL and held in right place with screws or staples that will permanently remain in your knee. After the grafting has been secured, your surgeon will test using enough tension in it, to see that the knees work properly. They will also check that knees have full range of motion and the graft inside the knees is capable enough to keep your knee stable when it is bent or moved.

After the satisfaction of the surgeon that everything is working as it should, they will close the incision and will apply a suitable dressing over it. After the finishing of the procedure, you will be removed from the operation theater and moved to the hospital ward to begin your recovery.

Graft Selection Method in PCL Reconstruction

At the back of the knee, the Posterior cruciate ligament is located. It is one of the ligaments which connect the thing bone to the shin bone. The PCL keeps the shinbone from moving backward. It is the strongest knee ligaments. The PCL injuries are not as common as other knee ligament injuries. It takes much time for evaluation. When PCL injury is left untreated, it can lead to the early formation of arthritis in the knee joint.

The surgery takes place when the PCL is completely torn and the swelling and is completely subsided and makes the knee to move.

PCL is replaced with a new ligament by “a grafting method” generally from the hamstring.

Though there are many treatment methods for PCL reconstruction, Dr. Kanna’s Knee & Ortho Clinic provides the advanced care of knee joint without opening for treating PCL tears.

PCL Reconstruction includes different types of graft selection methods such as

Autograft: Tissues are taken from the patient’s own body. Generally, hamstring and quadriceps tendons are taken in Autograft. However, it depends on the patient’s physical condition and injuries.

Allograft: Graft is used from a donor used for PCL reconstruction. Typically, Tendo-Achilles with its bony enclosure is used as a graft. Allograft is generally preferred when the ligament injuries are combined or when there is no option. Introducing a knee arthroscopy, the old PCL is removed. Then, the tunnels are drilled in both tibia and femur to allow the graft to be passed through the knee. An additional incision is usually made toward the knee back to protect the artery.

What are the types of grades of PCL tears?

  • Grade I: The PCL has partially torn
  • Grade II: The ligament is torn partially and loosen than Grade I
  • Grade III: The PC ligament totally tears and the knee becomes unstable

What will be the symptoms I look for in PCL tears?

  • Pain with swelling and may cause a person to limp
  • Difficulty in walking

What are the initial treatments of PCL?

  • RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression and elevation
  • Medications
  • Physiotherapy

Common causes of PCL tear are:

Hitting on any vehicle dashboard with a bent knee, falling with a bent knee

Dr. Raj Kanna is one of the best known orthopedic surgeons in Chennai who offers the best PCL tear treatment in Chennai. He is a young eminent surgeon in Asia, who affords excellent PCL reconstruction in Tamilnadu along with modern technology.

Know More about ACL tear and How to prevent it

Acl is the stabilizing ligaments of knee. ACL can be injured if the knee is bent backward, twisted, or bent side to side. This kinds of injuries are common in sports

Why does the ACL fail to heal?

Usually the ligaments heal by scar formation. But the fluid around the ACL prevent blood clotting within the joint and due to this the no scar tissue is formed. Thus the ACL rarely heals continuously.

What happens if the torn ACL is not operated?

Both non-operative treatments using braces and exercise fails to rebound ACL tear. In this case tearing of other structures, such as the meniscus and the cartilage can happen. This may lead to arthritis (wear and tear) of the knee joint.

Both non-operative treatments using braces and exercise fails to rebound ACL tear. In this case tearing of other structures, such as the meniscus and the cartilage can happen. This may lead to arthritis (wear and tear) of the knee joint.

Why girls are at more risk for ACL injury compared to boys?

Girls are five to eight times more likely than boys to tear their ACLs for several

possible reasons:

  • 1) Girls tend to use their ligaments more than muscles when playing sports.
  • 2) At puberty, boys grow in height and leg muscles get developed. But, this doesn’t happen in girls unless they train for it.
  • 3) Girls tend to land in a more straight legged way than boys
  • 4) Girls knees tend to bend inward during jumping
  • 5) Girls have wider hips, which put more pressure on acl
  • 6) Female knee has a narrow notch compared to a male knee

What is the treatment for ACL tear in children?

Standard surgery in children may result in growth abnormality such as leg length inequality, or deformity at the knee. The younger the child, the greater the chance of deformity. Thus non-operative treatments like bracing & strengthening exercises are usually suggested.

Prevention of ACL Injury

Athletes and active young people can reduce ACL injury risk by :

  • 1) Maintaining general health & fitness.
  • 2) Using proper sport-specific movements and techniques.
  • 3) Wearing proper sport – specific gear learning which moves cause risks.
  • 4) Hamstring strengthening (especially in girls)
  • 5) Neuromuscular training (learning how to land properly from jumps) particular in females.
